Aboriginal Aquaculture

The Aboriginal Aquaculture in Canada Initiative (AACI) is a partnership between Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), along with three Aboriginal partner delivery organizations representing western, central and eastern Canada. The purpose of the initiative is to support Aboriginal involvement in the aquaculture industry with emphasis on economic, environmental and social sustainability. Waubetek delivers this initiative in central Canada to Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

Under this initiative, each regional team provides business and technical services to First Nations and/or Aboriginal entrepreneurs interested in pursuing opportunities in aquaculture.

Services include:

  • Guidance in developing viable business plans
  • Assisting to source capital for aquaculture businesses
  • After-care services for businesses in early stages of operation
